• My best friends sisters husband jumped my car off a couple of times one week and their alternator messed up and now they are trying to make me buy them a new one but i have been told that them jumping my car off had nothing to do with it going bad so im looking for a second opinion, HELP! =]

  • You are right, jumping a car, and their alternator goes bad, is not your fault. Nice friends you have there.

  • you are right jump starting your car a couple
times would not stuff up the alternator
alternators can stuff up any time any place
it is one of those things that happens
you are just unlucky that it happened
tell them to get over it and move on

  • Yes jump starting a car can be the cause of their fried alternator. Once the dead car fires up there can be a massive power surge, which in these days of sensitive electronics can cause damage, its rare but possible. I was taught to turn on the lights and any electrical accessories on the car doing the boosting to help absorb the surge.

  • All I have ever come across in this situation is that the car with the flat battery can end up with buckled plates when the AA or other knights apply their booster systems to your battery, also there is a special sequence of procedure when connecting cables to a vehicle, learn these from your manual.
Cars with Electronic systems would be better if their battery was disconnected before any charging process is applied.
It is a FAR BETTER Idea to remove the battery if possible and replace it with a borrowed fully charged unit to get you home, don't pay silly prices to the knights in shining armour unless you're in a totally desperate position, a cheaper supplier is a motor factor every time, many of these suppliers will deliver over a local area for free for C.O.D.
Once home recharge your original battery to place it back in service asap, or, if it is found to be dud then get a new one and check it weekly or before long journeys.
A useful Idea is to buy a good part used battery from a breakers yard keeping it fully charged ready for an exchange if the original fails, usually in winter when they are under great strain, you can then work between two battery units aiding reliability.

  • You could offer to help with a part of the repair. If they expect you
to pay the full amount they must be quite desperate. Their alternator
may have been on it's way out and the jumpstarts just put it over
    the edge.

I've noticed that you wrote "trying to buy a new one" are these
desperados even sure it's the alternator. Let them make the repair
and then you decide what to do.

Good Luck to you Bro... I've been in situations like this before .

One guy towed me out of a brook after 4 wheeling and as he left
us, he jumped his truck over a hill and flew about 10 ft through the
air. As he landed he blew his transmission. He actually asked for
the money to fix it. I gave him two cases of beer and that was that.
We are still friends to this day..

  • the battery can be damaged by boosting to much but not the alternator for to much boosting will only deplete the charging cells in the batery
